In 1973, wrote comparatively little – one novel (La Phaeton Hypocrite, a piece of juvenilia, notwithstanding), one play, and one short story collection – but her small oeuvre is distinguished by its quality and innovation. In any case, I'm thrilled to host Ann here and have her talk about her sublime new novel, THE OBITUARY WRITER, which is both a meditation of lost chances and grief, as well as a stunning story of two women who are decades apart--yet closer than they Ann has won a Best American Spiritual Writing Award, the Paul Bowles Prize for Short Fiction, and two Pushcart Prizes. At the last Ottawa I have long admired Bowles' most famous novel, The Sheltering Sky, but I recently picked up the Library of America's Collected Stories volume and I'm stunned by the quality of his short fiction. In the introduction to Bowles's Collected Stories (1979) Gore Vidal states: "his short stories are among the best ever written by an American: the floor to this ramshackle In NYC in the 1930s, he became one of the most important composers of American theater music, producing works for Tennessee Williams & others. One of my favourite writers, Paul Bowles, would seem to fit this mold, but the more of his work you read, the more you realize that he comes from very different tradition. Today is the 100th birthday of writer/composer Paul Bowles (December 30, 1910 – November 18, 1999). I had just read his novels “Under The Sheltering Sky” and “Let It Come Down” and his collection of stories in “The Delicate Prey” and was already a convert to his works. My favorite author, Paul Bowles, once said: “Every work suggests its own method.” Writing a short story takes, perhaps, a steadier hand than writing a novel.
